SUMMARY:I Am a Man: Chief Standing Bear's Journey for Justice
DESCRIPTION:Award-winning author Joe Starita will be the keynote speaker Saturday\, July 11th\, at the Missouri River Basin Lewis and Clark Visitor Center. As we celebrate America 250\, we must remember that freedom did not extend to many across the country until decades and centuries later. Starita’s presentation will discuss the legal\, social\, and political importance of the landmark 1879 Supreme Court decision in Nebraska. Through this decision\, Ponca Chief Standing Bear was recognized as a “person” within the meaning of the law and entitled to the same Constitutional protections as white citizens. This program is open to the public\, provided by Humanities Nebraska\, and sponsored by Friends of Arbor Lodge and the America 250: Nebraska City committee.
