SUMMARY:Native American Artifact Show
DESCRIPTION:The Missouri River Basin Lewis & Clark Visitor Center is hosting its annual Native American Artifact Show on Saturday\, March 8\, from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm.\nThe show will feature authentic Native American artifacts from a number of private and public collections. Visitors will be able to see some of the finest examples of spear points\, arrowheads\, tools\, and pottery in the Midwest.\nHands-on activities will include corn grinding demonstrations and pottery making.\n\nDon’t miss out on a special presentation at 1:00 pm!\n“Native Representation in the History of Nebraska and the Importance of Entities to Work with Their Respective Tribe”\nThis presentation is given by Gage County Historical Society and Museum and the Otoe-Missouria Tribe. Last summer the tribe and the museum partnered together to provide the public with a summer exposition about the Otoe-Missouria Tribe and their time in Nebraska and on the Big Blue Reservation. Melea Hoffman\, archivist and researcher from the Otoe-Missouria Tribe and Skye Che K’o Manyimi Harragarra-Harms 2024- 2025 Frontier Inter-Tribal Youth Leadership Princess representative of the Otoe-Missouria tribe will speak from the perspective of the tribe on how and why their tribe needed representation in Nebraska History. This includes the tribe’s perspective of how life on reservation is often misportrayed. Cassandra Dean\, executive director of the Gage County Historical Society\, will discuss how it was like working with the tribe and the struggles she ran into to make sure their representation was felt in the exhibit. As well give suggestions to entities (museum\, government\, non-profit\, and private) who work alongside Native American tribes.\n\n\n\n\nPlease Note: This exhibition is intended for educational purposes only and no sale\, purchase\, barter\, or trade of artifacts or similar items is permitted at the show or on the grounds of Missouri River Basin Lewis & Clark Visitor Center.

SUMMARY:Colorful Nature Presentation of Butterflies Native to Southeast Nebraska
DESCRIPTION:Prepare to make the most of Spring 2025 \nAttend a Presentation of \n“SE Nebraska Butterflies\, Where and When to see them” \nby Wildlife Photographer\, Stephen Hassler \nButterflies are beautiful pollinators. Some\, like Monarch\, are known to migrate\, but some adults enter a state of “diapause”\, like hibernation\, and come out of shelter on a warm day in March\, and sometimes February\, along most wooded paths and hiking trails near the river. I have selected approximately 125 of my best photographs from thousands that I have taken over the last 20 years; Monarchs\, Swallowtails\, Fritillaries\, and more\, featuring twenty-five varied species native to Southeast Nebraska.

DESCRIPTION:The Adventure Begins! \nScenes from the Start of the Lewis & Clark Expedition \nAn Educational Presentation of Twenty Paintings of the Eastern Portion of the Trail \nPresented by Steve Ludeman of Welches\, Oregon \nwww.steveludemanfineart.com \n  \nSaturday\, July 20\, 2024 \n1:00-2:00 pm \nAt the Missouri River Basin Lewis & Clark Visitor Center \n100 Valmont Drive \nNebraska City\, NE  68410 \nA series of 20 original drawings and paintings tells the story\, from 1802 – 1804\, of President Thomas Jefferson dreaming about having someone explore the western part of the continent\, to Lewis & Clark traveling down the Ohio River and up the Mississippi River\, to the mouth of the Missouri River – a distance of about 1\,400 miles. This art and history project involved a significant amount of research and traveling to significant sites along the trail over the past 3 years. \n“I am working with the national Lewis and Clark Trail Heritage Foundation and the National Park Service office in Omaha to use my art to show the crucial first part of the Corps of Discovery story\,” said Mr. Ludeman. \n“We are excited to bring this artist to Nebraska City\,” said Doug Friedli\, Executive Director of the Lewis and Clark Visitor Center. “Steve and his wife visited our Center a year ago to show us several of his works in progress. I am especially interested in seeing his rendition of Camp Wood River\, which is the fort we are currently building on the hill just west of our main building. Steve has interesting stories to tell about each of his pictures. His presentation will be entertaining and educational for people of all ages.”
