SUMMARY:Step Back in Time…To the winter of 1803-04
DESCRIPTION:Step Back in Time…To the winter of 1803-04 – Revised Date due to high winds and cold wind chills!! \nFebruary 7\, 2026 10am-3pm \n“Saturday with a Soldier” \nLewis and Clark Visitor Center\, 100 Valmont Drive\, Nebraska City\, NE \nIf you have you ever wondered how the men of the Lewis and Clark Expedition survived cold weather when they were cooped up in one of their temporary winter forts…this is your opportunity to get a feel and a taste of it. You will experience the following: \n>Costumed re-enactors telling stories of the Expedition and answering any questions you may have for them. \n>Bonfires to warm yourself outside and cook your lunch to eat with the soldiers. \n>Warm log cabins lit by candlelight with two large fireplaces and more reenactors explaining just how the men of the Expedition got along during that first winter together as a group of individuals which came to be known as “The Corps of Discovery”. \n>S’mores fixings with roasting sticks which you can also use to roast your own hot dogs from home. We are supplying all the drinks (coffee and hot chocolate)\, plates\, silverware. \n>Bring your kids for an experience they will never forget. \n>Black powder rifles and cannon demonstrations \nThis event is contingent on favorable weather conditions. If you have any questions please call The Lewis and Clark Visitor Center at 402-874-9900\, or call Doug at 402-873-2215 for last minute updates. If conditions are favorable\, we quite possibly will be able to drive our vehicles up to the fort complex to shuttle folks in. These options will assessed the day of the event. We will to our best for your particular needs.  Did I mention the Cannon?!!

SUMMARY:2026 Native American Artifact Show
DESCRIPTION:This educational exhibition event features authentic Native American artifacts from a number of private and public collections. Visitors will be able to see some of the nest examples of spear points\, arrowheads\, tools\, and pottery in the Midwest. Hands-on activities will include corn grinding demonstrations and pottery making. \nCome see an incredible traveling exhibition on display now through March 9 \nBig Blue Reservation: Struggles and Hopes of the Otoe-Missouria Tribe \nOne hundred seventy years ago\, the Treaty of 1854 was passed by Congress\, authorizing the move of the Otoe-Missouria Tribe to the Big Blue Reservation in Gage County\, Nebraska. The Tribe\nwatched as acre by acre of their land was sold off by the government and treaties were broken. In 1881\, the Tribe was moved from this reservation to Red Rock\, Oklahoma.\nThe Gage County Historical Society\, along with the Otoe-Missouria Tribe\, arranged a summer exhibit in 2024 to educate the public about this important part of American history. The Otoe- Missouria Tribe once called Southeast Nebraska home. Through the displacement of the people during the 1800s\, they lost sacred traditions. This exhibit includes their voices of how that loss affected them into the present. \nDON’T MISS A SPECIAL PRESENTATION AT 1:00 PM \nNolan Johnson \nNebraska State Historical Society Archaeologist \npresents \n“Otoe-Missouria Archeology in Nebraska”
