“Native Representation in the History of Nebraska and the Importance of Entities to Work with Their Respective Tribe”
This presentation is given by Gage County Historical Society and Museum and the Otoe-Missouria Tribe. Last summer the tribe and the museum partnered together to provide the public with a summer exposition about the Otoe-Missouria Tribe and their time in Nebraska and on the Big Blue Reservation. Melea Hoffman, archivist and researcher from the Otoe-Missouria Tribe and Skye Che K’o Manyimi Harragarra-Harms 2024- 2025 Frontier Inter-Tribal Youth Leadership Princess representative of the Otoe-Missouria tribe will speak from the perspective of the tribe on how and why their tribe needed representation in Nebraska History. This includes the tribe’s perspective of how life on reservation is often misportrayed. Cassandra Dean, executive director of the Gage County Historical Society, will discuss how it was like working with the tribe and the struggles she ran into to make sure their representation was felt in the exhibit. As well give suggestions to entities (museum, government, non-profit, and private) who work alongside Native American tribes.

Please Note: This exhibition is intended for educational purposes only and no sale, purchase, barter, or trade of artifacts or similar items is permitted at the show or on the grounds of Missouri River Basin Lewis & Clark Visitor Center.
